When we were kids, the thought of a pool, a real pool to swim in was something out of a fairy tale. No one had pools, at least no one I knew.
We took our swimming trips to the local creek, "Harricane" (like hairy cun)as we pronounced it but really Hurricane. Who Knew, I just took everyone's word for it, Never even noticing the big sign on the bridge that proclaimed. 'Hurricane Creek".
I believe it was Sheri that pointed that fact out to me and then proceeded to laugh and laugh. Hey I was Southern, I shortened words to my advantage. Hey I still am southern.
So yall sit back and listen to my tale of the big creek.
I could not swim, but I often requested a trip to the creek to go swimming. In fact I recall sitting under the kitchen table crying because I wanted to go. We did go often when it was so hot. One such trip, a storm suddenly came up. We rushed back home and inside before the tornado struck, somewhere nearby. I recall that night vividly although I was possibly only 5 or 6. We had pigs in a blanket (wieners wrapped in bacon and baked) for the first time, My Dad saw it somewhere and that was a real treat for us.
That was before he had his first heart attack. We went to that creek many times, often parking up the road and walking about 1/4 mile to the creek. We only walked if the rains had flooded the road or it had become so over grown we could not drive on it.
As the years passed the one spot by the big Oak tree was a favorite of my family, We often went down just to cool off, Hurricane creek was full of bauxite from the aluminum in the water being washed into the water. The color was a cool green.
In 1963 David came into my life and we, as a family went swimming, Or I should say, I went wading. My Mom, all my bros and sisters, coy and Lou. It was a great day, That is the first time he asked me out, Well that night, he asked me to a movie. , Of course I had to ask my Mom. I never accepted a date or invitation without discussing it with her first.
That day he decided he was going to teach me to swim, I hated it, he frightened me so much, He had his hands on me and my Mom did not allow that, NEVER, NEVER. I tried to get away, My Mom said, "Sue let him teach you to swim". (Ha, I don't think swimming was on his mind.)
I did not let him teach me but a date sounded nice. That is the best thing I could ever do for myself. Go out with him and fall in Love so passionately, and I still love him that much. Deep and devoted.
Oh Yes, he finally did teach me to swim, but we were married then. So it was OK. He actually taught me to dive, I learned to swim at the Redding Plunge with Nell.
That is another story, She was a stunt girl at the lake but did not know how to swim.
Tell you more later.
