I had red onions planted. They were doing really well. I was watching them grow.
I took my Grandchildren to the garden every day to, pull carrots and radishes and onions to eat. They loved it.
We had a Killdeer Nest under a squash leaf. We would go out and check on the eggs. The Killdeer would feign injury to pull us away from her nest. It was funny to watch. She pretended her wing was broken and chirped really loud.
We would then begin searching for the nest, we knew we were in the right territory.
One day those eggs were gone. No, Not the children, We figure a snake got them or a field mouse. However there were no shells anywhere. So a Snake it must have been.
OK to the Red Onions.
One evening I saw G in the garden, he seemed to be enthralled in what he was doing, Swinging his arms, He just looked like he was having fun. (HE Was)
I never thought of what he may be doing. It never crossed my mind.
Later that day I walked to the garden and there all over the area were my onions, Pulled and slung like toys.
I gathered them all up. I literally had an arm load of onions.
I took them to the house and knocked on my daughters door.
She opened the door. She said, "G did that". I said, "Yes but I can save some of them, I will clean them and put in the freezer for soups or stews".
We had a good laugh, with a little sadness. I found onions all the way across the garden several days later. I wish I could find one now that he threw but it gave me good memories.
My big onions were not going to be.
I was telling a friend and he said, "Did you pick him up and wear his butt out?" I said, "NO I DON'T DO THAT, He is just a baby".
His statement offended me. I know when mine were little I did not always have a lot of patience but I gained more as time went on. I was not a spanker but some days, Whew my last nerve was on edge.
This was total innocence. He was having fun slinging balls at something imaginary. He was about 4 years old. How could I get really angry?
However when I plant Corn I remember when D and M decided to run through the crop and shove down stalks. The corn was about 3 feet tall. Perfect for hiding in. I almost cried. I and their Mom told them they had to help clean it up. What they did was needed, I did not know corn had to be thinned. In their fun innocence they did something I should have done weeks before. However it did not need thinned that much. I still feel really bad for getting ticked at them that day. I can still see the hurt on Ms face as she sat down in the garden and refused to help.
She had never seen Mamaw upset like that.
I had to go set by her and explain. We both sat on the ground while D did most of the work.
Papaw S came out that day too, and he was not happy either.
My God it was just green plants. It was done, It was over, Get on with it.
I did, I was so glad they thinned the corn. By the time the crop was coming in, I realized the area they thinned had more corn than the area they did not thin.
They taught me a lesson that day. A lesson in farming.
G taught me to never just think a child in the garden is entertaining himself. At least this child, He was usually up to something.
I sure miss them here. I could use help planting and thinning the corn, peas and potatoes.
They loved living on the farm, it is now too much work for us,. However it would have been nice to live here 30 years ago and really use the land to its full advantage.
If I could save time in a bottle,
If I could recall each laugh or tear of joy.
I would love to have it all bottled up.
I could open it and listen when I felt blue.
However it is in my sweet memories,
Memories I love to relive often.

LOL I remember the onions, but not the corn. I also remember Dylan throwing rocks through the window because you had been demoing everything and he thought it was fun. What a mess THAT was! Kids don't know. I don't usually get upset over things like that if you haven't told them not to do it then they figure "why not". Sorta like when Dylan and Madi drew all over your porch rail. They had to repaint it. I know they didn't think about the consequences they just drew. (Wasn't it drawing?) I remember sitting on the phone in the kitchen and drawing all over the caulk when I was a kid. You handed me a toothbrush and made me scrub it ALL so there wasn't a clean spot of white caulk.
