Remember When?

It was 1965, David had a wreck.
He was actually driving a wreck (I think it was a 1955 Burgundy and white Chevy or was it a Dodge).. It needed so much work and we had no money. Mama needed her lawns mowed and ours was in worse shape.
David   borrowed a mower,  It was old and used up but it was better than nothing.
It broke down,
He paid to have it fixed, (I am not sure where that money came from)
He mowed all the neighbor hood between mamas house and ours, Between our houses was a little old man who was badly bent (osteoarthritis? ) so we did things for him too.
Then David had to take the mower home.
As he drove away, I prepared for him to return soon, Charles was a baby and he took really "Great Naps"
I had no premonition of something bad happening. I busied myself cleaning the house, making sure our one bedroom shanty was clean and food was ready to eat.
We had a "Shotgun house" That is what it was called.
The little house had a living room, a kitchen with every conceivable  large appliance we needed (for a kitchen) that was a cook stove and a fridge.   plus the kitchen housed a hot water heater.
The back of the house was slightly sloped, with a bedroom, and a bathroom. There was no door between the bed and bathroom or the living and bedroom. You could run a full circle around the rooms.
Charles did that a LOT.
So as a short time passed. My Mom appeared at the door and she was upset.
She said, "Sue we have to go, David had a wreck, He is OK but he needs us"
He was about a mile from home.
As we arrived at the scene, David was in a panic. The tie rod ends came down on the car and he could not control the steering. ( He told us that over and over)
However his biggest concern, A young boy was riding with his arm out the window and his arm was broken.
David was in a state I have never seen before or since.
The car was pulled, Yes pulled back to our house, and the time to deal with it was on.

David recalls who the judge was, how it was settled and how the boy did, I was in a state of disbelief.
We barely made enough to survive, How can we pay this off? What if the little boy was hurt more seriously. Now how could we buy the baby's milk? We already charged it at the local  pharmacy.
We owed about 30 dollars and we just could not see  our way out.
Why would you let a child ride with his arm out the window? Who was this?
Would the Dad  come to our house with a gun to kill the person that hurt his little boy?
If  it had been my little man I would be pretty upset.
(Yes David did check on the boy more than once,) Just this year, We pondered finding the young man, He would be over 50 years old now.

Many a rest less night was spent that month or year, I do not know how long it was but that was one of the turning points of us Leaving Sheridan, Trying to get to a job that paid more. Heck David made 1.25 an hour, and if it rained, (IF IT RAINED IN ARKANSAS?) Like  every week, He was unable to work.

The boss like David so he hired him to be sharpen saws one hour a day that was big for us, One extra hour, then he got a raise and began making an incredible 38 dollars a week. (if it did not rain)

One horrible time I recall with vivid memories,
David  went to work, after having the most horrible nose bleed you can imagine. He was spitting up chunks of blood. I was so scared he was bleeding to death. Finally it stopped.
It stopped after a long time of him sitting on the floor by the commode, spitting and being ill with his nose bleeding into the toilet.
He was so dizzy the next day and for several days and he was very pale. He had to work around saws and I was always scared he would cut his hand off or get killed and being dizzy is no way to work.
He worked at IXL manufacturing. They made ax handles etc.
He was also allowed to work on Saturdays or in the rain to move sawdust into box cars or load ax handles.

Times were hard but we made it. Some days we are not sure how we did it, But we did persevere.
If the church called, LOL LOL LOL , (we had no phone )
If the church asked, We would supply food for funerals, etc. We do not even know how we did that, but we did. Never a doubt that we would help out.

Gods grace was sufficient.

More to come on the outcome of the Wreck.
