Coyote

The coyote is back. He scares me and you all know I am not afraid of much..

Today, after lying around here all week, I finally decided to get out and mow the yards.
I got on my tractor and finished the job in record time.
Winter is coming and we must be ready. We have a few pipes to wrap, a few hoses to put away, the pool to winterize, the leaves to blow off the lawns. Pulling weeds from my flowers and trimming roses. That will wait until we have a good freeze or early January.
The place is coming together for the winter.
I will be lighting the fireplace soon. The mornings are really cool.

So back to the coyote. As I was completing dinner, I turned to David and said,

"The coyote was back today, I saw him run to the old shed on the other property, I bet he has a den there."
(the shed is surrounded by dense brush and elderberry trees, we think it is an old milk shed, it is made of heavy blocks and has a roof and brush growing up through the windows and roof.)

(That happens to be right beside my walking trail. A trail I mowed a few weeks ago to clear out.)

"You know that coyote worries me. Hey, Look, he is out there now".

We stood at the kitchen window and watched him for a good ten minutes. He sniffed the air, the ground and wandered around our field. We marveled at the beauty of his coloring and the white tip on his tail.
Then we became serious and closed the door.
I worried about Smokey, he seemed aware but he was not about to run and hide. No scary cat there.
I think the coyote is after the many ground squirrels we have in the field.
That is one place he can have good hunting grounds.
Whatever it is I hope he keeps his den hidden away and not in my yard.
Some one needs to tell me, Does that mean he can be rabid? Wandering around in daylight. Is that normal? Who knows what normal is? Hey Kris, you are the vet tech trainee, How about it? What do you know?

I borrowed these photos from the internet.

I hope it is OK, Wylie Coyote is the cute one. Mine is not so cute or funny.

Mom, you need to call animal control or the Sheriff's office for information. I normally don't think much of it, but a folk singer was killed by a coyote just this week. Just call and ask. And think of it this way: You wouldn't even think of letting your grandkids play out there alone with that Coyote roaming the property. So you don't play out there alone either!

*adding: Now you know I am not an alarmist, but when the Coyotes start using their run through our property we don't stay out. Just be careful and call for information.
