Today I picked it up to take to him. I groaned at the weight.
What was he doing?
He is a 72 year old man using an idiot stick!!!!!!!
To dig holes to plant trees.
MY FAULT.
I wanted trees for my birthday. So I go to town and buy 6.
Yep! you read correctly, but- but -but I got a great buy.
Our front drive is surrounded by flowering pear, They are "aristocrat" I think that means tall and slender. As they are all tall and slender while the Bradford Pear is tall but stubby. Well not stubby but definitely not aristocrat looking. That kind line the side of the house and the outside of the drive.
So the problem with the aristocrat is this, The wind broke the tops off two of them. Apparently they are not strong until they are older.
I called the nursery and they said, "Leave them alone, they should come back"
One did. One died.
So as I shopped I suddenly see it, an aristocrat for 18.99. That is an amazing price for a 15 gallon tree.
Problem, It only had two branches, (Charlie Brown Aristocrat Flowering Pear)
but I did not care. I knew I could baby it along and it would be fine.
The rest of the trees for the same price were Cleveland and Bradford Pears. Now our back yard is surrounded by these trees.
OH Darn I got totally off the subject of the Idiot STICK.
I felt pretty awful buying those trees and David having to work like that.
I had planned on hiring Bill, (our neighbor) to bring his back hoe over and dig the holes for us.
David is too stubborn to ask for help. I have no shame in that area.
But he did not want to ask, so I was going to call him tomorrow while David was at work.
Instead David went out and began digging holes. I walked out with him, Me still in my Jammie's.
I got on the ground and pulled the root balls loose, and helped get the trees in the ground.
That is until I picked up the IDIOT STICK.
I thought, "Wrong Way Boulfard, (from the movie "Bye Bye Birdie" 1963 movie with Dick Van Dyke and Janet Leigh) I am pretty sure that is where the phrase came from..
You don't need to pick that up again and he does not need to be working with it.
That is one heavy piece of equipment. I looked up the definition and I found lots, some funny some serious, The idiot is according to which end of the stick you are on. I think today, the Idiot was me for buying the trees.
Sorry Sweetie but I need two more trees,
You know the ones I plan to make a heart entry to the back field.
You know Chinese something or other. But that can wait.
For information. You take two trees that are pliable. You have to be able to bend them into an arch. You then tie the tips together, and bring it down into a Vee. It becomes heart shaped. I think that is a lovely idea.
I saw it at a Resort Inn where we stayed , Cottage Grove Oregon.
They had gardens everywhere, it was a treat to just wander around the gardens. I got lots of great ideas. A yellow and blue garden, A red and pink garden, Rose gardens, Topiary gardens, Herb gardens, I have the rose gardens, and I have my herb garden started. As soon as I get the grape arbor painted I will send photos.
So that is what we did this weekend.
A LOT of WORK!!!!!!
