OK it was 1966 when we moved to California, still 44 years ago.
I have to tell you of the overload springs.
The Impala did not have them from factory, so Coy, ingeniously, put springs on the car. I am not quite sure how.
They came off more than once and the side of the car would sit down, The guys would have to get out and put them back. Again I can not remember how that was done.
I bet Lou can tell.
I don't know why I put in the wrong date. Charles was born in November 1964 so he could not have been born yet, let alone walking. LOL
We had no money for motels, so we slept in parks, on the hood or trunk of the car or just stayed awake.
I recall being so tired I would have loved a BED. JUST a Bed to lie down in. PLEASE...
One time we stopped by a delta somewhere, Around Modesto area.
We were wiped out. We all got as comfortable as possible, in the heat and crowded conditions. Suddenly we were all attacked by a swarm of mosquito's. We were slapping mosquito's and I was fanning them off Charles.
We moved out of there really fast.
One night we arrived in Red bluff and slept at the park. David and I could not sleep, we walked to the cafe on the corner and Jim McLemore was there. (Charles was sleeping peacefully in the car rear window) We had coffee to keep us awake. When we walked back the sun was coming up and time for more bologna and bread. LOL
Wow how did we do it?
Just perseverance.
Yep Charles I know we must have looked like the family from the Grapes of Wrath.
Only thing missing was the rocker on top of the car. Not sure it would fit with the top loaded with boxes and covered with a tarp tied down with rope.
