How Far is Heaven
Today as I was picking beans, I recalled a song I sang so many years ago, I was about 12 or 13 and my sisters and I used to sing in church.
My Mom loved our singing, she thought we were great, but she was our Mom, so of course she would.
When my Mom had her final days in the hospital, we gathered around her bedside and sang. I spent a full week at her bedside and I would not take that time back for anything except to have her back.
We were singing "I Saw A Man," A tear rolled down her cheek, so we knew she heard us, Although she could nto comminicate. At one point she raised her hand to heaven to praise God. (A gesture I had seen often in her life), My Mom was a quiet person, never calling attention to herself. She made no spectacle of herself at any time. She was a well dressed lady, Lady in every sense of the word. She got up every day, dressed in nice clothes, made a pan of biscuits for breakfast, made sure the peanut butter and syrup was on the table, made sure we were up then only then would she relax.
My Mom passed away 7 years ago this month, Will I ever stop missing her? NO! She is as much a part of who I am as I am a part of each of you. You will look back on certain days and possibly have very fond memories.
A memory is what you make it, Good or bad. All of our lives involve some heartache, some pain, some mistakes, It took a king to forgive us and he only had to do it once. We can't keep crucifying him,
We hope each of you take from your lives what we tried to put into them, Love, Compassion, Self worth, love of God, Love of family, Each of you have been given an awsome responsibility, They look you in the eyes every day, looking for guidance, looking for hope for tomorrow, Don't take away any of their hopes and dreams, Sometime a dream is all we can have but it is ours to have.

Sounds of Silence
A long time ago, and not so far away, either. My life was so different, I do not mean physically or spiritually.
The silence of a night was deafening, I wish for more of that silence now, instead of the steady drum of the trucks on the freeway. It never stops.
When we lived in the country, we could tell who was coming to see us by the sound of their automobile. Really, Grandpas old truck had a certain rattle, or squeak, Uncle Charles had a sound of its own, each car was distinguishable. Your dad said his uncle Sterling drove a Nash Ambassador and they could hear him gunning it several miles away.
I remember sleeping at my grandma and grandpas house and being so afraid of the night sounds, They did not have electric lights, on the river, so we had coal oil lamps, I would cringe when Mama blew out the light, All the frogs, crickets, coyotes, dogs, everything you could hear, Freaky for a little kid.
We could hear the steady paddle of the boat as Grandpa was docking, He often went fishing at night, pulling in his trot line. Every sound is amplified in the quiet of the country and sounds carry on the river.
So I do wish for that quiet again, Maybe next summer our dreams will come true. Maybe a nice quiet little house by a river in the Ozarks.
no freeway in our back yard. That is for city folk. Not a country girl.

Creeks and Pools
When we were kids, the thought of a pool, a real pool to swim in was something out of a fairy tale. No one had pools, at least no one I knew.
We took our swimming trips to the local creek, "Harricane" (like hairy cun)as we pronounced it but really Hurricane. Who Knew, I just took everyone's word for it, Never even noticing the big sign on the bridge that proclaimed. 'Hurricane Creek".
I believe it was Sheri that pointed that fact out to me and then proceeded to laugh and laugh. Hey I was Southern, I shortened words to my advantage. Hey I still am southern.
So yall sit back and listen to my tale of the big creek.
I could not swim, but I often requested a trip to the creek to go swimming. In fact I recall sitting under the kitchen table crying because I wanted to go. We did go often when it was so hot. One such trip, a storm suddenly came up. We rushed back home and inside before the tornado struck, somewhere nearby. I recall that night vividly although I was possibly only 5 or 6. We had pigs in a blanket (wieners wrapped in bacon and baked) for the first time, My Dad saw it somewhere and that was a real treat for us.
That was before he had his first heart attack. We went to that creek many times, often parking up the road and walking about 1/4 mile to the creek. We only walked if the rains had flooded the road or it had become so over grown we could not drive on it.
As the years passed the one spot by the big Oak tree was a favorite of my family, We often went down just to cool off, Hurricane creek was full of bauxite from the aluminum in the water being washed into the water. The color was a cool green.
In 1963 David came into my life and we, as a family went swimming, Or I should say, I went wading. My Mom, all my bros and sisters, coy and Lou. It was a great day, That is the first time he asked me out, Well that night, he asked me to a movie. , Of course I had to ask my Mom. I never accepted a date or invitation without discussing it with her first.
That day he decided he was going to teach me to swim, I hated it, he frightened me so much, He had his hands on me and my Mom did not allow that, NEVER, NEVER. I tried to get away, My Mom said, "Sue let him teach you to swim". (Ha, I don't think swimming was on his mind.)
I did not let him teach me but a date sounded nice. That is the best thing I could ever do for myself. Go out with him and fall in Love so passionately, and I still love him that much. Deep and devoted.
Oh Yes, he finally did teach me to swim, but we were married then. So it was OK. He actually taught me to dive, I learned to swim at the Redding Plunge with Nell.
That is another story, She was a stunt girl at the lake but did not know how to swim.
Tell you more later.

Fire and Water
What a weekend we had, When David got home on Friday, we were standing at the sink talking when I saw fire in the field, Bet you can guess his first word, "Did you do that?" I was surprised but not totally. He saw the tractor, which I had used that morning, (while it was cool). The thing he should have noticed it was by the freeway, I was hoping it would burn the entire field but the CDF was too efficient. Some one had thrown a cigarette or a truck threw a spark, I only burned to the ditch, and got our trees, Guess we are doomed to not have trees at the freeway. We give up on that. The fire however, did almost get the house by the freeway, it came to their back door. Literally, they had cactus and it appears to be gone too,
We went out and put out all the sprinklers to cover the orchard and keep the ground wet but it never made it that far.
Next was water, We laughed so much Sunday, we both said how good it felt to really have a long belly laugh.
We were in the pool brushing it down, we thought if we were closer to the sides we could brush it better. Well first I go down, I pop back up, then I go down and I seep swimming backwards, I tell your dad to stand close so I can hold myself down, I grad his suit, I hear him laughing so hard I come up blowing bubbles, We try and try but we recall a movie where a family has a logging business, well one brother is caught under a log with the water rising, so brother number two has to give him mouth to mouth while trying to figure out how to move the logs, The dying brother starts laughing because his brother is kissing him. The other is mad, one is laughing, It was hilarious, and Sad. Needless to say one died laughing.
That was on our minds when trying to go under, I also would stand on his back and he tried to brush but I would see big bubble coming up and know he was laughing under water.
so we had a really good laugh. We also had all our dinner out of our garden, fresh beans, squash and potatoes. Of course we had steak too, it was good good. So that was our weekend, we went no where but Dave and Gwena did come over, looked over the pool and said it was very nice. She did ask us is we were doing all the yard work ourselves. Of course we do, planted everything that is planted. I think people are surprised at the growth here, since it is new construction.
But you all know us, we don't stand still long enough for grass to grow under our feet.

Pool reporting for Duty
Finally it is done, the cool deck is "cool" the pool is clearing up, after several vacuuming and cleaning filters and vacuuming and clean filters. Whew, what a mess they make putting in cool deck and cement. David vacuumed until almost 10 last night, and I had vacuumed in the morning until something plugged the vacuum hose.
When he got home he knew how to fix it, "Go figure".
Today I began the process all over again, vacuum, clean filter, then I swept it and let it just filter. Clearing up nicely. So Charles and Shelle when you get here it will be ready for you, I know this heat will be a killer for you two.
I will be glad for you to see the pool, we placed lights around the perimeter. Last night we turned on the fiber optics and the solar lights were very pretty. Now we have to get more rock delivered, maybe the color of the cool decking to place in the area around the perimeter of the pool. Just more work, always more work, Darn I am getting so tired of working all time.
So today instead of spending the day outside, I am making plum butter and plum jelly. We went to Kens and picked a half bushel of plums, They are really nice plums. I have worked on it sporadically for two days, now I have to get down to business and get those jars sterilized.
So that has been my day or two, hope yours was just as fruitful. (no pun intended).

What can I write
What can I say, How can I tell you how much I miss you?
The weather here has been as nice as it can be, although it doesn't really matter much to me, its raining in my heart since you're so far away, so it might as well rain until September.
That is a song, by the way, but so true of how much I miss each of you kids. As your dad and I were lounging in the pool, we made a big discovery,
POOLS ARE A LOT MORE FUN WITH KIDS AROUND!!!!!!Really, it is so different with just us, of course we can skinny dip after 9 o'clock (pm of course) or we can just lie back and look at the stars, but it is not as enriching as it was with you all to enjoy it with us. We miss all the kids jumping on us, Your Dad being the brunt of Hop on Pop. Me well me being the bearer of good food, and cold drinks.
I think we did have a wonderful time with you kids, we would not take anything for those memories. I vividly recall Charles trying to shoot bats that would swoop down to the pool for water, only to later discover that was leaves caught in the fence. LOL
Ken taking a swim for a few bucks. (In the dead of winter). Sher beating Charles in sit ups, and me beating Sher in Hula Hoop. She finally put her foot into mine to make me miss, and last but not least is your Dad breaking the no running rule, and hurting his back when he slipped.
so guess you all have to get here and swim as soon as you can.
Bye
We discussed how different your lives are in relationship to your double first cousins. It seems you would have been more alike, since the same genes were part of both families.
Well it is not that way, Now I am not trying to be pious. That would be a sin. But we can be thankful for what you have given us. R-E-S-P-E-C-T. The one thing that will get you through tough times.

Long Time
It has been a while since I posted.
We had a quiet 4th. We stayed home, all day, Nancy and Paul came by and we served cake and tea. She always tells me I make the best Tea in the world, I tell her I grew up making tea every day.
We did not have tea bags, we used loose leaf tea, and we sweetened it with saccharine. YUCK! I liked it then but now I can taste it. I rememerber Mama bought these huge bottles of saccharine tablets, We put apporx, 20 in each gallon of tea. Well it was cheaper then sugar, and our budget was pretty tight.
We, as Al promised was in the pool on the 4th of July. In fact Ken and Kris came down on Saturday night and we all went swimming, then back in on Sunday. The pool is nice and comfortable. Not hot but not cold either. Ceylum had a ball. He swam back and forth all over the pool, (with a life suit and swimmies). I have a video I will put on line to see. Evan did great too one we got in into the deep, and he saw he was not going to drown with the protection on. I actually pulled him away from the steps then said swim back, He was fine from then on. He especially loved racing Cey to his Dad in the deep end. I think it was a tie. Jarod, poor little Jarod, I think the bug population had it in for him. First we were at the mobile pad, and a praying Mantis dropped out of the tree on him, Mommie showed him it was OK and let it crawl on her and Ceys arm. (kiara wanted nothing to do with it). Then when we were swimming , a black widow that had taken up habitat under the side of the pool, jumped on his suit, he was screaming, Ken was trying to get it off and finally Kris grabbed Jarod and pulled him into the water, then the spider died from freight, I am sure. Last but not least a bee swooped down toward his head looking for water. He finally gave up and He and Mamaw sat on the patio. All in all it was a great weekend and No the pool has not leaked any more. YET!!!
So that is how our day went how about yours, I am sure all of you saw fireworks, we did, a little, when Anderson had their show, We could see it through the trees behind the house. We certainly weren't going to leave the house we were exhausted.
